Russian Caravan Tea

It's been a while since I've posted about tea so I've decided to make Tuesday my Teas-day.First tea in the pot - Russian Caravan Tea.

During the time of the Tsars, tea would travel from China to Russia in camel trains and during the long journey the tea would develop a smoky aroma from the campfires that would be lit each night. Russian Caravan tea is a blend with a sweet yet smokey aroma - while you can find variations of the blend this one is made with a mix of Lapsang Souchong, Keemun and Oolong.

Once brewed, the colour of the Keemun comes through, giving the tea an almost orange look - the smokiness of the Lapsang is subdued and drunk black, it doesn't have those drying tannins which makes it quite refreshing.

I'm not a great fan of Lapsang Souchong as I find it can be too overpowering but this blend seems to place it in a more palatable form.

  1. Oooh! The. Best. Tea. Ever!

I'd always get this when we went to our favorite tea-house here in Benicia, California. It's truly awesome, and probably your description is far better than how I usually describe it ("barbecue-grill scrapings" are part of my description).

Thanks for blogging it, and reminding me that we need some!
