Negroni

For this weeks FOCS, I've gone for a classic apéritif, Negroni.

Negroni is a simple drink to make - equal parts of Campari, Gin and Red Vermouth, stirred over ice and served with a garnish of orange peel.

It has its origins in Italy, Florence to be precise. Created in the early 1900's for a Count Camillo Negroni, who if legend and wikipedia is to be believed, asked his bartender at Caffè Casoni to add some "ompf" to his favourite cocktail, the Americano. This was done by the addition of gin and thus the Negroni was born.

For those with eagle eyes, you might recognise that the map sitting underneath the Negroni is actually of Florence. As a bit of fun and as you'll see more clearly below, the Negroni has been placed near the location of what used to be Caffè Casoni.

Negroni

1 part Campari
1 part Sweet Red Vermouth (I used Noilly Prat)
1 part Gin
ice
orange peel

  • Half fill glass with ice.
  • Add in Campari, Vermouth and Gin - stir to combine.
  • Garnish with a slice of orange peel

  2. Gotta love a well made Negroni as you sit back and enjoy the flavours history and mystery of an age old favorite. Should be a standard in the newest and oldest bars.
